Research 12: Articles On Body Shop Packaging

I decided to look into news and article results for The Body Shop Packaging to see what issues have been raised to the media that i may have missed, this again aids my project.

Article 01:
The Body Shop will launch the Wellbeing range of beauty products in 100% post-consumer recyclate (PCR) plastic bottles to coincide with the firm’s first marketing campaign since it was taken over by L’OrĂ©al.

Article 02:
The Body Shop (TBS) pares down on time needed to research containers by tapping into a global, multivendor online packaging catalog.

Article 03:
Better visual impact and shelf presence are driving forces behind The Body Shop's new packaging. But, as always, environmental issues rank high on the list of measures the company is using to assess how well its new packaging is working.

Article 04:
What's wrong with The Body Shop?

Research 10: Inspirational Packaging

I began to research into inspirational beauty packaging that i believe is pretty good each in their own ways...

“Hand lettering is done in collaboration with Miladin Miletic and it highlights content and ingredients while the one with small illustrations ref
lects the joy of using Sofi soaps.”

“Through a redesign that exudes a natural charm and confidence, Seventh Generation offers consumers a promise of liberation from the burdens associated with mundane household tasks. The package design utilizes sustainable m
aterials, while maintaining a hygienic appeal, ensuring a product that users can trust to be safe for both the environment and the body. Tampons are packaged in individual molded paper pulp packs of 5, featuring a quick dispense method for convenience, while also offering the advantages of being easily portable and discreet. Pads are packaged in a sturdy paper pulp box. Toilet paper is packaged in a reusable biodegradable bag and the toilet cleaner features a hygienic hideaway nozzle.”

“Salon Modern is a new upscale salon cooperative where stylists can invite their own clients into an intimate, personal environment that inspires, refreshes and rejuvenates. Nothing chain-like, nothing cookie cutter, Salon Modern is a one-of-a-kind experience designed to bring out the beauty and style of its patrons.”

“I designed the identity and packaging for Dapper Chap Mustache Wax, the Gentleman’s Whisker Shaper. This collection of fine waxes comes complete with 4 enticing aromas.”

This vegan lip balm comes in an array of brightly coloured oval shaped tubes, designed to stop the product from escaping from your back jeans pocket like round tubes tend to. An added benefit is the oval shape of the balm allows a more precise application on the lips. The tubes are made of #5 recyclable plastic, and if you buy three, they come to you in a reusable unbleached cotton tea bag stamped with the Hurraw! mark using a food-safe, permanent dye.

Research 09: The Body Shop: General Packaging

Below is my research and opinions of other Body Shop packaged products. I decided to look at more than what was asked as it really helps you to see the diversity in their packaging ranges.

"For The Body Shop, beauty is a feeling, a natural way of being, where character, self-esteem and humour are freely expressed and celebrated. Thats the soul of beauty. Its not just about looking beautiful, its about exuding a vibrant attitude to life - LOVE ETC... is all of those things and more"

The body shop normally pick a vibrant colour and design a ra
nge built on that with photographs used of fruits and nature, but what caught my eye about this Love ETC range was the purity of the white with no photographs but simple cute misshaped hearts. I did like this simple change however i thought the hand cream did look slightly cheaper, so perhaps it could have been better.

The Body Shop have reformulated their popular Hemp Body Collection and now it has been dermatologically tested and features Community Trade hemp seed oil. New products have been introduced to the range making it more ideal for a wider audience of people. The Hemp Body Collection is the first body care range for very dry skin to feature Community Tradehemp seed oil, which is sourced from a cooperative of small-scale English farmers.

Back by popular demand! The Body Shop decided to re-launch some of their original favourite flavours from the 1980's for a limited period at their original pricing. The packaging for these i feel could have been so incredibly funky but i think they really dipped out with the old 'vintage' effect teal photographic background.

Research 08: Body Butter (All Over Body Moisturiser)

The fourth and final product on the list from the brief was the top selling Body Butter. The Body Shop sells body butter in two sizes. A 50ml tub which costs £5 and a 200ml tub which cost £12.50. A brilliant feature to these butters is that they are available in so many different flavours, and whichever you choose, one you unscrew the lid you will be greeted with fabulous scent! Different butters have different consistencies and you can read a guide as to which is best for your skin type on the website (or click to enlarge the image below).

After reading reviews from the foundation products i felt that this gave me a good opinionated insight to what consumers thought of the product as they would have took their time to tell this. I decided to read more reviews for the body butter to see if there was anything to keep or improve when i do my designing.

"The tubs the butters are kept in a thick coloured plastic. They are round and shallow and have a screw on and off lid. It is hard to get the body butter out without getting it stuck under your nails as you have to scoop it out, and for me that is a downside to these butters. Luckily once the seal is broken and the lid is unscrewed, it is easy to screw back up a
nd get a tight seal without it leaking into the rest of your stuff."
This review here tells me that there is a problem when getting the butter onto your hands as it gets underneath your nails, this gives me something to design around, perhaps to design better so that this won't happen. However the customer does appear to like the easy screw lid, with lack of leakage - something to keep?

Always being a fan of The Body Shop, I've been using their body butter for a while and I must say it is great. You have choice of a small tub or a very large tub (I always buy the bigger one). I love the packaging of this product. A circular tub with the colour of the fruit that the product is
based on with a picture of it in the middle. The Body Shop logo is obviously present in the middle and details are going around the outside of the picture in a circle.
This reviewer is happy with the current packaging, in particular the colour scheme for each flavour, encouraging me to look more into colour schemes or maybe even keeping the current colour scheme.

Research 07: Liquid Foundation (Make Up)

The third product given in The Body Shop brief was 'liquid foundation'. After searching the website, i found the 'oil free balancing foundation SPF15' and the 'moisture foundation SPF15' were the 2 liquids available amongst loose powders and primers.

Looking through customer comments and reviews (taking into consideration the consumer) i wanted to find some help as to how they perceived this foundation. I found some fab descriptions that give you a real visual feel for this make up, i also found some bad points noticed by consumers about the packaging, this helps me to illuminate the problem when it comes to my re-design. To realise what the public think in general is good to know too, like the cost of the product etc.

Comments for Oil Free Balancing Foundation SPF15:

"i am the kind of person who will try anything once. so, since i am a great lover of the body shop (im in nearly everyday) i thought i would give there make up range a go! i bought this product and was thinking to myself, oo i really hope this is good because it was £12! i took it home and tried it on. i was amazed, its absolutely fantastic, the best foundation iv ever bought! i would recommend it to anyone. the consultants in the shop helped me to find a correct shade and it fits exactly to my skin tone. it makes skin feel soft and glides onto the face beautifully, a must have for every girl. it also gives a great coverage. also it smells like heaven! ive been using it everyday since i bought it!"

"I love this foundation, really light and fresh on my skin and lasts for ages. Several foundations i have used before always leave me looking shiny after a while but have not found this problem with this foundation. Great buy!"

Comments for Moisture Foundation SPF15:

"This is the best foundation I have ever used. It is easy to apply, feels creamywithout leaving a shine and it lasts for ages. I have used it with loose and solid face powder but neither are essential. It is probably better to try the shades on in a shop to make sure you buy the right one for your skin colour.Highly recommended."

I have used this foundation since i was about 20 (im 31 now). I have tried other high end rnads since then but none compare to this. Easy to apply, non shiny andmoisturising all at the same time plus the bottle means you dont waste a drop. Only bad point, because of where the silver band is at the top of the tube you cannot see how much more you have and might end up running out.... for anyone interested you get about another 15-18 pumps once you get to the silver band.

Research 06: White Musk (Fragrance)

The following products are from the White Musk range by The Bo
dy Shop, they show the latest series of packaging for this product range. 'Luxuriously sumptuous, creamy and silky' are the words used to describe White Musk. The
Body Shop have taken this approach by using a dark purple with a gradient that fades to white or clear, seemingly to enhance to the silky effect.

Interesting...

- The Body Shop White Musk (feminine) EDT – this fragrance has been around for a long time, originally launching in 1981. It is one of The Body Shop’s best selling items and contains notes of velvety musk, floral lily, ylang ylang, oriental jasmine, rose, iris, sweet vanilla, fresh amber, patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver with hints of fruity peach.
- The Body Shop White Musk for Men – this was launched two and a half decades after the original White Musk. It contains notes of lavender, geranium, crystal jasmine, vetiver, amber, sandalwood, musk and tonka bean.

Found on this Blog

Now i know that White Musk is nearly celebrating its 30th birthday, is a top seller and produces scents such as amber, rose and vanilla i have a better understanding of the product. Knowing all these ingredients gives me a visualisation that i don't see in the current packaging, i think the purple is starting to become dated as is the gradient to white/transparent that is used with it. There is now also a mens variety of White Musk which creates an opportunity to design a range alongside the women's.

Research 05: Tea Tree (Skincare For Blemished Skin)

The following products are from the Tea Tree range by The
Body Shop, this shows the latest set of packaging for this product. You will notice it is all matching with fresh green leaves to give
that naturalistic feel. There is plenty of text on the main face of the product which often promotes that the product has nothing to hide and boasts its organic ingredien
ts.
All of The Body Shop's tea tree oil is Community Trade from The Kenya Organic Farmers’ Association (KOOFA). " Helps t
o strengthen and develop the local economy and create vital employment on the farms, providing opportunities for local people to stay in their community rather than seeking employment in urban areas."
I think that on the product this aspect perhaps isn't seen well enough.
Each product has a repetitive 'T' on it to show that it is part of that range. I think there could be something better than this T to show people this. The colours used are minty fresh and i would like to get a palette done with a set of colours for this r
ange.

Research 04: The Body Shop Manifesto

In 2009 The Body Shop produced a values report entitled 'Living Our Values' for anyone and everyone to download from their website. This report will tell you the in's and out's of what The Body Shop do to back up their 5 core values, and why. I have read through it and found some interesting facts to take along with me to my development. If you get the time, try and have a read!

Research 03: Body Shop - Values

Throughout The Body Shop website, it tells us that the foundation of the company is built upon its 'Strong Values'. By looking in depth at their explanations for each value gives me a better understanding of the company and how they want to be perceived. This also helps towards any ideas i may have.

Research 02: Current Body Shop Campaigns

These are the recent campaigns that the Body Shop are currently in support of.

These are the ways in which you can support the charity through The Body Shop. As i go on further in this proje
ct i should think about designing additional products for example like this campaign; petitions, card report
s and a Facebook page.
The design of the identity for this campaign is one that really inspires me and my style of working. I love the bright bold colours and my initial thoughts were to head for contemporary colours such as like these. This has been great inspirational research.

Stop Violence In The Home:

Why The Body Shop support this cause:
Domestic violence happens everywhere. At least 1 in 3 wo
men around the world are beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. In many cases, the abuser is a member of her own family or someone known to her. Stop Violence in the Home is a global campaign created by The Body Shop 10 years ago to inspire customers and employees to get active against domestic violence. Our campaign aims to raise awareness of the issue and generate funds to help those affected.

Where it all began:
In 1994, The Body Shop launched a ground-breaking campaign in Canada. In that first year of campaigning The Body Shop raised $155,000 for violence prevention and recovery programmes and received the Grand Award from the United Nations for addressing this important issue. Soon to follow in Canada's footsteps were The Body Shop in Malaysia, the Philippines and the United States. These pioneers inspired the launch of the global Stop Violence in the Home campaign
in 2003.

A truly Global Campaign:
By 2006 the campaign had reached 47 markets across the world. In 2008, Stop Violence in the Home will run in 56 markets. Since the first campaign was launched, more than £2.6 million has been raised. These funds are vital in the fight to stop domestic violence, but fundraising is only half the story of what our campaign has achieved. Bold, innovative, groundbreaking, even law changing, the achievements of employees and customers in raising awareness and changing attitude
s has been truly remarkable.

Again other aspects of the campaign such as reports and websites, the more i find the more i want to create which means i have a lot to do!
The overall look of this campaign is a sky blue with a peaceful flower, it suggests serenity and calm accompanied by a friendly handwritten care-free typeface. I am not sure if i want to take this style with me through to my ou
tcomes, I will have to do more researching and see what is needed for this particular subject and judge from there.

Stop HIV:

In March 2009, The Body Shop and MTV unite for the Yes Yes Yes campaign, taking action against one of the most destructive epidemics to ever hit humankind: HIV/AIDS.

'Join our campaign and get your hands on our tantalising Lip Butter. All proceeds from every Lip Butter sold goes to raising HIV and AIDS awareness around the world (In the UK this is £3.98).'

The identity involved with this campaign has a real contemporary take on an olden vintage american theme i feel. The colours make me think of the old Propaganda posters for the World War, with the big assisting chunky text. I quite like its strong appearance however.
